Cute book and innovative concept!

Such a cute book! Very innovative concept. I bought two copies , one for my granddaughter and one for a friend,s daughter. The stories are so cute and the way the author used the story line to describe some of the cooking techniques is wonderful. For example: "the pears chased her around the room" when the instructions are to stir the pot, way too fun. Easy to follow and very organized recipes that children will love making and eating. Specific spots in recipes where an adult must help are well noted for both the child's safety and parent's peace of mind. I highly recommend this book to all parents of little ones.

Cute, charming & clever! What a great idea! Bought this book for my grandson and can't wait to start teaching him how to cook in such an adorable and fun way. The illustrated, easy-to-read recipes with intertwined stories are a delight and capture the attention of your child making it an absolute fun time in the kitchen. What a great way to spend time with your child in a hands on activity!! The combination of reading and cooking is a unique experience sure to entertain and delight your child. The story and recipe concept is both fun and creative. The illustrations add an extra aspect to invoke discussion. I love this book and can't wait to use it and give it away as gifts.

About the Author
Catherine�M. Pittman, PhD, is associate professor at Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, IN. As a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in South Bend, IN, she specializes in the treatment of brain injuries and anxiety disorders.�She is a member of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), and provides workshops and seminars on the topics of anxiety and stress.

Elizabeth M. Karle, MLIS, is collection management supervisor at the Cushwa-Leighton Library at Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN. In addition to supplying research for this book, she has personal experience with anxiety disorders—providing a first-hand perspective that focuses the book on what is most useful for the anxiety sufferer. Originally from Illinois, she currently resides in South Bend, IN, and holds degrees or certificates from the University of Notre Dame, Roosevelt University, and Dominican University. Helpful Strategies

If you are looking for a book that is just going to provide strategies for how to overcome anxiety, this is probably not the book for you. However, if you are interested in both the neuroscience behind stress and anxiety and learning techniques to cope with those responses, then this is an excellent volume to read. Personally, I agree with the authors that it is often easier to overcome stress when you actually know and understand what is happening to your brain, and how it can manifest itself in physical ways. And while this book is very detailed, I think the authors did a good job of keeping everything easy to understand.

Numerous types of stress are discussed in this book, including the reasons that these types of stress occur and what parts of the brain are responsible for your response. If you’re anything like me, you are constantly trying to make logical sense out of your worry, but I learned from this book that there may not always be a logical reason behind your anxiety. In fact, you may not ever really know why you certain situations, thoughts, sounds, smells, etc., can trigger an episode of panic. The good news is that you don’t have to know. The authors go into great detail to describe techniques that you can use to essentially “rewire” your brain to avoid having stress responses. The book mainly discusses the two different parts of the brain that deal with fear and stress, the amygdala and the cortex. The amygdala is basically your body’s natural fear response system. Your amygdala often works without your ever knowing it, such as when you are driving and instinctively swerve out of the way to avoid hitting another car. The cortex, on the other hand, deals with worry and obsessive thoughts. For example, your cortex is to blame when you are constantly worrying about a possible outcome that will likely not occur. You may have one or both of these types of stress, and the authors provide useful “exercises” that can be used to deal with both of these types of stress.

If you’re reading this review, I’m guessing that you probably don’t care about all of these details though, right? What you really want to know is if the methods in this book really work. I think they could certainly help many individuals who suffer from stress and anxiety. These authors give insightful strategies to help with different types of stress responses, all of which are based on years of research. Your stress isn’t going to go away overnight having read this book, but it certainly may help you learn to cope with your anxiety when it does occur.

Accessible Book for Understanding Anxiety

This is a very useful and informative book. The book is pitched to well-read, intelligent laypeople and explains the neurobiology and the underlying research in a clear, concise and comprehendible fashion. After reading this book, the reader will understand the mechanisms of anxiety very well.

Dr. Pittman and Ms. Karle cover treatments, which the typical anxious person can do on his own, and more in depth treatments which require professional help. The authors are very clear about when someone suffering from anxiety should seek assistance from professionals.

I would recommend this book to anyone curious about anxiety and how to deal and treat it. This is very well written and accessible and not intimidating at all. A very good read!

A must have for anxiety sufferers and their families

I have had anxiety in the past and got this book from the library in order to help my teenage daughter. It is so good that I am ordering my own copy. The workings of the brain while anxious are explained clearly. Understanding what's going on is half the battle! Excellent explanations of how different strategies can rewire your brain follow. If you have any experience with anxiety and want to understand it better or help some one else, this book is a MUST HAVE!

Emotional health results from modeling Jesus Christ's life.

This is the perfect book to give to the introvert who has been too shy and too bound up with his own self to make a success of life. I have probably read this book seven or more times, and it was an amazing help in taking me from being a shy introvert to a happy extrovert life-style. Henry Link, a New York City psychologist, presents Jesus Christ as the perfectly adjusted extrovert personality. Although originally an agnostic, Henry Link found himself more and more using the teachings and example of Jesus in his psychological counseling. And in the process, he led himself back to faith in the Master, and to a happier more adjusted lifestyle. You will never go wrong in reading this book. It changed my life for the better, and its teachings are worth their weight in gold.

This author is referenced by Dale Carnegie (Win Friends and Influence People). I thought I would go to the source. It was written during the depression. The author is a professional psychologist. He does not practice religion. In his journey his life takes a strange twist. He found that his professional and scientific vocabulary was not sufficient for the needs of the people who were seeking his advice. He finds himself making recommendations to his clients using Biblical expressions. The findings of psychology were largely a rediscovery of old religious truths. " His Return to Religion was the road of a science that years before had lead him away from religion." I find that fascinating.

Religion as psychological benefit

Henry C. Link (1889-1952) was an early, modestly well-known, psychologist who, after receiving his PhD from Yale, spent most of his career doing personnel studies and market research for large corporations. Perhaps his most useful contribution to the field was mathematically proving that by sampling a carefully selected cross-section of 5000 people, a researcher could come within one percent of the result of polling the entire population.

Link was reared in an evangelical Methodist church but became an agnostic during his undergraduate years at a Methodist college. His “return to religion” was stimulated by a belief that being associated with a church was psychologically beneficial, as well as for other reasons that may strike 21st-century readers as odd. For instance, he said he attended church because he would rather lie in bed late on Sunday mornings, because going would please his parents and better influence his children, because he would have to greet people, “many of whom do not interest me in the least,” and because some of his best friends considered him a hypocrite for going. “I go, in short, because I hate to go and because I know that it will do me good.” (19)

In this brief work (which sold over 160,000 copies within two years of publication), Link opposes what he calls “introspection,” by which he means an overemphasis on bookishness and theoretical musings. He advocates participating in social life, perhaps by dancing or by playing bridge (one of his hobbies) rather than isolating oneself in solitary contemplation of serious books—including psychology, which he especially thought produced symptoms of “over-education.” (152) To find “the more abundant life,” Link recommended male patients join the CCC or even the Army. He took a dim view of New Deal liberals who believed that the federal government ought to provide for everyone’s material needs, and he argued that those who lacked emotional balance and who had failed to master their own social environments often became social workers who hastened to impose their own inferiority complex on society as a whole.

Much of the advice Link provides here is practical and sensible as well as politically conservative. Whether it has much to do with religion, I leave to the reader.

A Must-Have Book for Carpenters Fans!

To a diehard Carpenters' fan there is no such thing as too much information. After all, there just might be some new tidbit about a song or lyric you weren't aware of before, or you might learn about some unusual event or history associated with a particular song. The fascination with the Carpenters is never over.

Enter Rick Henry with his latest book, "Expanded Edition: The Carpenters Online Interviews." Like his first edition, the second edition also features individuals that provided lyrics and/or songs to the Carpenters. One of the new interviews is with Terry Draper, who was a member of the group, Klaatu, and co-authored "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft." Did you know that it was Tony Peluso, guitarist for the Carpenters, who suggested this song to Karen and Richard? In the Danny Ironstone interview you learn about the history and inspiration behind the song "Prime Time Love." How did Karen make this song more her own? I liked the pure honesty in what both musicians had to say about their songs and how they felt knowing their songs were going to be repurposed in the Carpenters' signature style.

One of my favorite interviews was what actually turned into a four-part essay by Palma Pascale, the author of "Love Me for What I Am." Palma gives us a marvelous, detailed scenario of how hard it really is to be a lyricist in this industry and that nothing is ever a sure-thing. This interview was in the first edition of Rick's book, but I enjoyed it even more reading it again. What is new is the tribute written by Tim San Paolo, a close friend and associate to Palma. She was such a down-to-earth person.

I also enjoyed getting to learn more about Lucy Drive, the actress, who portrayed Karen Carpenter in the documentary film, "The Last Hours of Karen Carpenter," which aired in August 2014.

Then we get to a marvelous section of the book, the section dedicated to Karen's solo album: "Karen Carpenter: Behind the Scenes of the New York Solo Sessions." It is now over 30 years since Karen Carpenter passed away (February 4, 1983), yet we are still itching to know more about this fascinating songstress. There are six interviews with musicians /technicians involved with Karen's project. I was completely immersed in what each individual had to say. You cannot read interviews like this anywhere else! This edition expanded the interviews with well-known drummer, Liberty DeVitto, and multi-talented Russell Javors. Two of Russell's songs ended up on Karen's solo album. These are the country-tinged "All Because of You" and the new-wave rocker "Still in Love with You." Russell also composed the arrangement for the latter. Additionally, he wrote "Truly You," which is one of the nine, unreleased Karen solo songs.

The third section of the book, entitled, "From the Perspective of the Fans," shares insights from several fans. It's always interesting to learn more about fellow Carpenters fans and how they were impacted by Karen's talent. Each story is unique. Finally, the book ends with an interview with Rick Henry. We get to learn more about him, how the concept for the original "The Carpenters Online Interviews" book came about, and what motivated Rick to do this second edition.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will read it more than once. It also is attractively designed and makes a beautiful coffee-table book to share with visitors. Besides Carpenters fans, if you know someone who wants to learn more about the history behind some of the Carpenters songs and Karen's solo experience via interviews, this is definitely the right book to read!

In another essay it is argued that one widely favoured account of literary appraisal - that it deals with literature as literature - is in fact empty, while in an essay on the novel the author raises the question of how prose fiction can be thought of as being true to life. From these general questions Professor Robson moves on to consider particular works and authors in the light of the preceding discussion of critical principles. Essays on Treasure Island, Kidnapped and The Wind in the Willows are followed by surveys of Tennyson and Robert Frost, while the last four essays discuss literary questions by analysing what has been written about them by four distinguished poet critics: Hopkins, T. S. Eliot, I. A. Richards, and Yvor Winters. The overall aim of the volume is to take conversation about prose and poetry out of the limited and specialized literary or academic worlds in which it so often takes place and open it up to a broader world of reflective people, whoever and wherever they happen to be.

About the Author
Steve Grenard is an avid herpetologist with more than forty years of experience with amphibians and reptiles; he published a paper on the reproduction of the Marsupial Frog in 1958. In the summer of 2000, he published a controversial and widely debated review in Natural History Magazine on the possibility of American rattlesnake venoms evolving new properties. He is the author of several Howell Book House titles, including: Your Happy Healthy Pet: Bearded Dragon, An Owner’s Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet: The Lizard, and Amphibians: Their Care and Keeping. He is also the author of a number of scholarly medical and herpetological books, including Medical Herpetology and Handbook of Alligators and Crocodiles, and is the author of Introduction to Respiratory Care, a best-selling text review of respiratory therapy. Steve is a board-certified respiratory therapist and polysomnographer and is the clinical coordinator of the Institute of Sleep Medicine at Staten Island University Hospital in Staten Island, New York.

VERY COMPREHENSIVE BOOK ON FROG CARE.

I RECENTLY ACQUIRED A WILD TREE FROG, AND HAVE PURCHASED MANY OTHER BOOKS ON FROG CARE. THIS TEXT GAVE VERY CLEAR, SIMPLE, AND PRACTICAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR TERRARIUM SETUP AND CLEANING, FROG HANDLING, AND DIET INSTRUCTIONS. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT FOR NEW FROG OWNERS.

I bought this book for my daughter who has started a frog habitat. She thinks its a comprehensive collection of information for someone starting out with frogs.

I ordered this book from amazon and I am very glad I did

Both of my daughters are obsessed with the backyard critters. They catch lizards and frogs and toads and make the habitats for them. They wanted to know how to build some habitats for their toads that are as close to their natural habitats as possible. After googling and finding some controversial info, I ordered this book from amazon and I am very glad I did! My 8 year old found it very useful and still refers to it when she wants to learn more. This book is very informative in that not only it teaches how to set the most natural habitat and give your pet frog or toad the proper care, but it also includes some very interesting info on these animals, telling about the different varieties and their differences and gives nice, colorful pictures. We enjoy it.
