a lot of the explanations seem completely unnecessary to me

Needed for a class.

As far as textbooks go, this one feels incredibly over-comprehensive. I suppose the idea is that it's assuming you have literally never seen a computer before, but as someone who grew up with them....a lot of the explanations seem completely unnecessary to me. Which of course, makes the book way to big and heavy. It's unpleasant to lug around.

But homework assignments are relatively easy.

She is also the Clinical Director of Therese A. Rando Associaties, Ltd., a multidisciplinary team providing outpatient psychotherapy, specializing in loss and grief, traumatic stress, and the psychosocial care of the chronically and terminally ill. I find Theresa Rando's book very timely and interesting. That's as a caregiver in a hospital setup it just become apparent that you can only help people grieving by first getting in touch with your own visceral feelings. And that's where she started it. Thus until one permits herself or himself to feel what is normal and natural of grief situation it becomes a mirage to be able to help others.

By the author's skillful and indepth discussion on Grief, the Reaction to Loss, she brought to bear all the processes which often times either exaggerated or minimised in some books. Thus by exposing what goes on in the shock, disbelief, denials and all other psychological manifestations of grief, there is no doubt that whoever gets this book is on the way to becoming a good caregiver in whatever situation.

Finally, I believe the author's work on The Dying Child made her stands out among many authors. The issue of societal reactions to the death of a child, the challenging reality of childhood terminal illness, and basic principles of care for the dying child among others points to the fact that, Theresa has left a landmark yet to be discovered by many.

I found this book as a basic textbook, reference book, and a dictionary for grief and all death and dying topics that come my way in my caregiving activities and write-ups.

A Must for Professional Caregivers

This is an academic book so it's not appropriate for those who are grieving or for friends who want to be supportive, but I consider it a must read for professional caregivers, doctors, nurses and therapists who are treating people who are dying and those grieving their loss.

It is a well documented overview of the early research on grief and grieving. It provides exercises for practitioners to uncover their own issues with death, dying and grief, while providing practical interventions for working with those who are experiencing a death.

Despite its age (1984) it should be required reading for all therapists, grief counselors and medical practitioners. Along with J. William Worden's, Grief Counseling and Grief Therapy: A Handbook for the Mental Health Practitioner, Fourth Edition, you'll get a rather complete education on the subject of death and grief. This is especially important for those who may have missed it in their academic training and now find themselves dealing with it regularly.

For those who are grieving, I recommend Therese Rando's book, How To Go On Living When Someone You Love Dies.

Ironically hypocritical

This book covers some good information, but the content should have been right-sized and illustrated in to a much "Simpler" magazine article. Simple dwells too much on a handful of case studies, and repetitively iterates through each of them. The book also incorporated one example from the "reality" show Undercover Boss, which IMO is one of the phoniest reality shows I've seen. At the end the book tries to make Simplicity a cause for political and consumer activism.

Should you choose to get this book, let me make it Simple for you. Read chapter 6 and skip the rest.

An idea whose time is now

After finishing this seductive little book, one of the most memorable passages for me was the one in which the authors assert that there is no perfect definition of simplicity. Why? How can that be? Their reasoning is that what it takes to accomplish true simplicity calls upon many factors and, that in the end, what is - and what we regard as - truly "simple" is really anything but.

I loved this book. It led me to appreciate the constant battle we all face to make sense of our world in these crazy, hyper-technologized, choice-inundated, supposedly modern times . My conclusion, born of Simple? More is definitely not more. But less is only less if it doesn't sacrifice content and meaning.

Siegel and Etzkorn advocate a 3-part formula for simplifying almost anything: The need to empathize, distill, and then clarify. Easier said than done, but rock-solid in its logic. Read the book to learn the "how to" behind this approach.

In the end, the thought that has entered my mind and won't leave is this unrelenting, conundrum: We want things simple but gladly welcome more in the way of choice (mobile phones, brands of milk, cars, cereals, etc., etc.). Underneath this conundrum is a kind of immaturity, a lack of personal self-awareness, which marketers exploit and we don't seem to see. Maybe, it's time we did. Alan, Irene, perhaps you can aid the cause by applying your experience and wisdom to simplifying us human beings?

To all who yearn for - really yearn for - a window into the mysteries of what simplicity is all about and why we crave it, grab a copy of Simple. Sit down with a glass of water, in a quiet room, read this book and see if you don't "see" how life might be, were it just a little bit simpler.

At first, "Simple" struck me as over the top in its obsession with indecipherable phone bills and menus crammed with too many choices. I expect hidden gotchas in the reams of pages in credit card agreements that I will never actually read until it’s too late to avoid them, and I assume that the directions for assembling my new patio set will be so confusing that I will need to make multiple calls to the manufacturer’s helpline. Traditionally, we haven’t classified these annoyances as marketing problems—but as customer experience becomes a core element of marketing, it’s clear that the damage caused by complexity extends far beyond the customer service department.

Although Siegel and Etzkorn take on everything from the 14,000-page U.S. tax code to prescription drug labels, rest assured their book is written from a marketer’s point of view: Siegel previously founded and led the global branding agency Siegel + Gale and now leads Siegelvision, an organizational identity and brand strategy consultancy; Etzkorn is Siegelvision’s chief clarity strategist.

“Customers are fed up with bureaucracies that inundate us with generic and impersonal information, don’t take our calls, create convoluted procedures, request too many signatures, provide baffling instructions, erect barriers of legalese, and find a thousand other ways to distance themselves from us,” declare the authors. “The truth is, every bit of correspondence you send to customers—email correspondence, statements, contracts, proposals, instructions, applications, call center scripts—speaks louder than your ads, because it’s a more direct and personal form of contact.” In short, if your cheeky ads are followed up with an awful website experience or a contract dripping with legalese, you’ve blown it.

For those who remain unconvinced that simplicity is better business, the authors give anecdotal evidence of the overlap between companies that simplify and those that go on to achieve runaway success. Unsurprisingly, Apple and Google play a prominent role in Simple, as do Trader Joe’s (which offers about one-tenth of the products of a typical supermarket) and, in one of the book’s best examples, Southwest Airlines.

The Southwest story is so powerful because it demonstrates that it’s possible to simplify even in excessively complicated categories. When the airline was launched 45 years ago, its founders sought simplicity by buying only Boeing 737s, eschewing the intricate hub-and-spoke system for nonstop flights, and forgoing assigned seats. The upstart airline passed the benefits of simplicity on to consumers in the form of lower fares and fewer extra fees. (In a category that increasingly nickels-and-dimes its customers, Southwest still checks the first two bags free.) The Southwest story underscores the fact that "Simple" is not going to let you off the hook, even if you argue that simplicity won’t work in your company.

As you might expect, "Simple" devotes a good deal of time to the jargon masters who dwell at the very top of the complexity food chain: lawyers. Siegel and Etzkorn argue that the greatest fear of the typical CEO is lawsuits, and that fear has served to “elevate lawyers to a position of unchallenged authority.” They argue that plain language “can actually end up putting you on safer legal ground, because it provides plain evidence that you were never trying to hide anything or hoodwink anyone.”

The legal department’s very existence points to the most difficult thing about becoming simple: adopting the approach across the organization. Any company can whittle down its contracts, but achieving true simplicity, like every other major change initiative, requires buy-in and support from the top. It takes vision to infuse an organization with a more simplified approach, which in its highest form affects the way a business operates, how it markets itself, and how it creates great customer experiences. Thus, the first step toward better marketing may be getting a copy of "Simple" to the CEO.

Grade 7 Up-The author attempts to cover all of Iraq's history from the earliest shepherds to today's embargoes. He does a good job with most of the ancient history and with explaining the rise of Islam. Spencer clearly explains how society changed as the land was ruled by a variety of foreign interlopers. Unfortunately, mistakes are rampant; it is stated that many of Hammurabi's laws "deal with problems familiar to us today, such as-the purchase and sale of slaves and their owners' obligations toward them." In the modern era, any reference to the grandeur of the past serves only as a reason to mention how bad things are under Saddam Hussein. Later in the book, when discussing Hussein's life, the author gets the math mixed up. He says his subject was born in 1937, which is consistent with other accounts, but then the text reads as though he were 23 years old in 1968, when he became a member of the Revolution Command Council. The nondescript illustrations consist of sketches and mundane black-and-white photographs. The pictures of Hammurabi and Muhammad are switched. Two black-and-white maps show Iraq's relationship to other countries in the Middle East, but offer no detail of the country itself. The mistakes and omissions in this book make it unacceptable.

Gr. 7-12. Conflict is not new to Iraq, as Spencer reveals in this historical overview of a troubled region, from its Mesopotamian origins to Sadam Hussein's rule. The impact of the ideology of Islam (Spencer uses the term Shias instead of the more familiar Shiites) in its various forms is especially well explained. Hussein is treated critically but fairly in the context of a complicated and explosive political situation. Besides source notes and a concise summary of basic facts about the country, there is an extensive bibliography of books (no articles or Web sites), primarily scholarly titles from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Complex sentence syntax and a dry style may discourage less able readers, but for serious students researching the events leading up to the Persian Gulf War or for high schools where Middle Eastern studies are part of the curriculum, Spencer's treatment is both comprehensive and noninflammatory. About the Author
Benjamin Ginsberg is the David Bernstein Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Center for Advanced Governmental Studies at the Johns Hopkins University. He is the author or coauthor of 25 books, including Presidential Power: Unchecked and Unbalanced; Downsizing Democracy: How America Sidelined Its Citizens and Privatized Its Public; Politics by Other Means; The Consequences of Consent; The Worth of War; and The Captive Public. Ginsberg received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1973. Before joining the Hopkins faculty in 1992, Ginsberg was Professor of Government at Cornell. His most recent books are The Fall of the Faculty: The Rise of the All-Administrative University and Why It Matters; What the Government Thinks of the People; and Analytics, Policy and Governance.

Theodore J. Lowi has been John L. Senior Professor of American Institutions at Cornell University since 1972. He was elected President of the American Political Science Association in 1990 and was cited as the political scientist who made the most significant contribution to the field during the decade of the 1970s. Among his numerous books are The End of Liberalism and The Pursuit of Justice, on which he collaborated with Robert F. Kennedy.

Margaret Weir is Professor of Sociology and Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. She has written widely on social policy in Europe and the United States. She is the author of Politics and Jobs: The Boundaries of Employment Policy in the United States and coauthor (with Ira Katznelson) of Schooling for All: Class, Race, and the Decline of the Democratic Ideal. Weir has also edited (with Ann Shola Orloff and Theda Skocpol) The Politics of Social Policy in the United States.

Caroline Tolbert is Professor of Political Science at the University of Iowa, where she regularly teaches the introductory American government course and was awarded the Collegiate Scholar Award for excellence in teaching and research. Her research explores political behavior, elections, American state politics, and the Internet and politics. Tolbert is coauthor of Digital Citizenship: The Internet Society and Participation; Why Iowa? How Caucuses and Sequential Elections Improve the Presidential Nominating Process; and Virtual Inequality: Beyond the Digital Divide. Digital Citizenship was ranked one of 20 best-selling titles in the social sciences by the American Library Association in 2007. Her latest coauthored scholarly book is Digital Cities: The Internet and the Geography of Opportunity. She is President of the State Politics and Policy Section of the American Political Science Association.

Robert J. Spitzer is Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science at The State University of New York at Cortland. He is the author of 15 books, focusing in particular on the presidency, gun policy, and the Constitution. Spitzer's books include The Presidential Veto; President and Congress; The Presidency and the Constitution (with Michael Genovese); The Politics of Gun Control; The Right to Bear Arms; and Saving the Constitution from Lawyers. His most recent book is Guns Across America. He is also a regular contributor to the Huffington Post and many newspapers.

Very romantic.

Interesting background to this Lynsey Stevens book. Colourful Norfolk Island. The heroine, Kezia, is passionate about her island heritage and devastated when she learns her friend Shann wants to sell his family's island business. To add insult to injury the business is bought by a Mainlander. Once again Lynsey Stevens has woven a wonderful story about likeable characters who are genuine and believable. Another great read.

About the Author
Jason Overby received his B.S. degree in chemistry and political science from the University of Tennessee at Martin. He then received his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Vanderbilt University (1997) studying main group and transition metal metallocenes and related compounds. Afterwards, Jason conducted postdoctoral research in transition metal organometallic chemistry at Dartmouth College. Jason began his academic career at the College of Charleston in 1999 as an assistant professor. Currently, he is an associate professor with teaching interests in general and inorganic chemistry. He is also interested in the integration of technology into the classroom, including the use of online homework. Additionally, he conducts research with undergraduates in inorganic and organic synthetic chemistry as well as computational organometallic chemistry.

Dr. Julia Burdge did most of her undergraduate work at Iowa State University, completing her bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in inorganic chemistry at the University of South Florida in Tampa. She earned her Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at the University of Idaho. Her Master’s and doctoral research involved the development of chemotherapeutic analogs of cisplatin and the development of instruments and methods for measuring ultra-trace concentrations of atmospheric sulfur compounds. Over the past 20 years, she has taught introductory and advanced courses in every division of the undergraduate chemistry curriculum, as well as interdisciplinary courses. She also developed and taught a new introductory chemistry course for pre-service science teachers, and initiated and served as a mentor in a future faculty development program for graduate students and post-doctoral associates. She is currently affiliated with the University of Idaho.

For a college level textbook, it could be better. Some of the answers are actually wrong so it's bar to tell if I did a problem correctly or not. It also has some errors in the chapters.

Excellent Chemistry Textbook

I bought this book as the textbook for my first chemistry class in college (I'm a chemistry major, so it's the first of many). I had taken chemistry in high school, but that had been two years earlier. This book was just the right step up from my high school class, but I think that it would also be easy to understand for someone who has not taken the subject before. It's well laid out and explains topics well before moving on. One feature that I really appreciate is that when it brings up a topic that hasn't been discussed for awhile, it gives the chapter and section so that you can look it up again. Overall, I think that Atoms First is an excellent textbook for students who are new or fairly new to the field of chemistry.

About the Author
Ronald Harwood came to England from South Africa in 1951 and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He was an actor for seven years, and began writing in 1960. Since then he has written numerous plays for the stage, including 'After the Lions', 'Tramway Road', 'Interpreters', 'Another Time', 'Quartet', 'Equally Divided' and 'Mahler's Conversion', and an adaptation of Chekhov's 'Ivanov'. He also wrote the screenplay for the film of his West End and Broadway hit, The Dresser, which received five Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Screenplay, and the screenplay for The Pianist, the Palme d'Or-winning movie directed by Roman Polanski.
