A Must-Have Book for Carpenters Fans!

To a diehard Carpenters' fan there is no such thing as too much information. After all, there just might be some new tidbit about a song or lyric you weren't aware of before, or you might learn about some unusual event or history associated with a particular song. The fascination with the Carpenters is never over.

Enter Rick Henry with his latest book, "Expanded Edition: The Carpenters Online Interviews." Like his first edition, the second edition also features individuals that provided lyrics and/or songs to the Carpenters. One of the new interviews is with Terry Draper, who was a member of the group, Klaatu, and co-authored "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft." Did you know that it was Tony Peluso, guitarist for the Carpenters, who suggested this song to Karen and Richard? In the Danny Ironstone interview you learn about the history and inspiration behind the song "Prime Time Love." How did Karen make this song more her own? I liked the pure honesty in what both musicians had to say about their songs and how they felt knowing their songs were going to be repurposed in the Carpenters' signature style.

One of my favorite interviews was what actually turned into a four-part essay by Palma Pascale, the author of "Love Me for What I Am." Palma gives us a marvelous, detailed scenario of how hard it really is to be a lyricist in this industry and that nothing is ever a sure-thing. This interview was in the first edition of Rick's book, but I enjoyed it even more reading it again. What is new is the tribute written by Tim San Paolo, a close friend and associate to Palma. She was such a down-to-earth person.

I also enjoyed getting to learn more about Lucy Drive, the actress, who portrayed Karen Carpenter in the documentary film, "The Last Hours of Karen Carpenter," which aired in August 2014.

Then we get to a marvelous section of the book, the section dedicated to Karen's solo album: "Karen Carpenter: Behind the Scenes of the New York Solo Sessions." It is now over 30 years since Karen Carpenter passed away (February 4, 1983), yet we are still itching to know more about this fascinating songstress. There are six interviews with musicians /technicians involved with Karen's project. I was completely immersed in what each individual had to say. You cannot read interviews like this anywhere else! This edition expanded the interviews with well-known drummer, Liberty DeVitto, and multi-talented Russell Javors. Two of Russell's songs ended up on Karen's solo album. These are the country-tinged "All Because of You" and the new-wave rocker "Still in Love with You." Russell also composed the arrangement for the latter. Additionally, he wrote "Truly You," which is one of the nine, unreleased Karen solo songs.

The third section of the book, entitled, "From the Perspective of the Fans," shares insights from several fans. It's always interesting to learn more about fellow Carpenters fans and how they were impacted by Karen's talent. Each story is unique. Finally, the book ends with an interview with Rick Henry. We get to learn more about him, how the concept for the original "The Carpenters Online Interviews" book came about, and what motivated Rick to do this second edition.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will read it more than once. It also is attractively designed and makes a beautiful coffee-table book to share with visitors. Besides Carpenters fans, if you know someone who wants to learn more about the history behind some of the Carpenters songs and Karen's solo experience via interviews, this is definitely the right book to read!

S. Eliot, I. A. Richards, and Yvor Winters. The overall aim of the volume is to take conversation about prose and poetry out of the limited and specialized literary or academic worlds in which it so often takes place and open it up to a broader world of reflective people, whoever and wherever they happen to be.

About the Author
Steve Grenard is an avid herpetologist with more than forty years of experience with amphibians and reptiles; he published a paper on the reproduction of the Marsupial Frog in 1958. In the summer of 2000, he published a controversial and widely debated review in Natural History Magazine on the possibility of American rattlesnake venoms evolving new properties. He is the author of several Howell Book House titles, including: Your Happy Healthy Pet: Bearded Dragon, An Owner’s Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet: The Lizard, and Amphibians: Their Care and Keeping. He is also the author of a number of scholarly medical and herpetological books, including Medical Herpetology and Handbook of Alligators and Crocodiles, and is the author of Introduction to Respiratory Care, a best-selling text review of respiratory therapy. Steve is a board-certified respiratory therapist and polysomnographer and is the clinical coordinator of the Institute of Sleep Medicine at Staten Island University Hospital in Staten Island, New York.

VERY COMPREHENSIVE BOOK ON FROG CARE.

I RECENTLY ACQUIRED A WILD TREE FROG, AND HAVE PURCHASED MANY OTHER BOOKS ON FROG CARE. THIS TEXT GAVE VERY CLEAR, SIMPLE, AND PRACTICAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR TERRARIUM SETUP AND CLEANING, FROG HANDLING, AND DIET INSTRUCTIONS. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT FOR NEW FROG OWNERS.

I bought this book for my daughter who has started a frog habitat. She thinks its a comprehensive collection of information for someone starting out with frogs.

I ordered this book from amazon and I am very glad I did

Both of my daughters are obsessed with the backyard critters. They catch lizards and frogs and toads and make the habitats for them. They wanted to know how to build some habitats for their toads that are as close to their natural habitats as possible. After googling and finding some controversial info, I ordered this book from amazon and I am very glad I did! My 8 year old found it very useful and still refers to it when she wants to learn more. This book is very informative in that not only it teaches how to set the most natural habitat and give your pet frog or toad the proper care, but it also includes some very interesting info on these animals, telling about the different varieties and their differences and gives nice, colorful pictures. We enjoy it.

Very Interesting!

This by far has been one of the most eye opening accounts of gang life in the hard streets of Los Angeles, CA. Growing up and knowing many of those places related in this book I can only imagine what Shakur went through. The book shows us right from the start the lack of attention and love that many children experience growing up in these kind of communities and the lack of resources to stray them away from the choice of becoming a gang-member. Though this is not an excuse and Shakur recounts this, none the less he decided to take that route. Receiving the name Monster after brutally beating someone up to the point where the newspapers said, it "was a monster" who must have committed such a brutal act we are taken from his early years to those of a hard core gang-member. What I really liked about this book was how well it was written and how the author held nothing back. But what was most interesting is how he opens his eyes to the violence and lifestyle he chose to live and changes everything around while in prison. I do want to advice that this book has strong language, but it is a very interesting account to the life of a hardcore gangster and his transformation.

Lady Master Pearl is the biography of an American woman who achieved a high level of mastery, and at her death achieved the liberation of the ascended state. This is a personal account by one of her prot�g�es, Peter Mt. Shasta. After his return from India, where he met Ram Dass, Maharajji, Anandamayi Ma, Sathya Sai Baba and other saints, the master Saint Germain materialized before him in Muir Woods near San Francisco, and sent him to Pearl to receive training in the I AM and the Great Laws of Life. Unlike the East, where meditation is usually practiced in seclusion, she taught him how to be present and meditate in the NOW. Further, she taught him how to invoke the Law of Attraction and Manifestation through the use of I AM Affirmations. She also taught how to receive inner guidance by tuning in to one's own heart. Pearl was a student of the ascended master Saint Germain, and personal assistant to Godfre Ray King, founder of the Saint Germain Foundation. After Godfre's ascension in 1939 she was told by Saint Germain, along with many others, to withdraw and start her own group, which became a new vehicle for many new spiritual teachings. Through a series of seemingly miraculous events, she becomes a vehicle for the Great Masters of Wisdom, and a beloved teacher of many. In this loving biography we read of her adventures on the path, how she was saved by a Lady Ascended Master, her adventure with the yellow diamonds she used to help transmute negative energies during the building of the Golden Gate Bridge, and how she came to be present at the signing of the United Nations Charter in San Francisco. We also hear of her relationship with her Twin Ray and the other two men in her life. This beautiful book is an excellent introduction to the spiritual teachings of the Ascended Masters, and contains many inspiring stories that show how Pearl achieved mastery through daily life. She was not a "guru" or famous workshop leader, yet though her innocence and simplicity gained exceptional wisdom and the ability to transform people through her love.

Peter Mt. Shasta is the best-selling author of books on his experiences with the Ascended Masters, and the teachings they have given him on how to contact the I AM Presence within, and invoke it in daily life. Previously he traveled in India, spending time with Ram Dass, Maharajji, Sathya Sai Baba, Anandamayi Ma and other saints. He also studied with the Tibetan Lamas, Trungpa Rinpoche (founder of Shambhala.org) and Chagdud Rinpoche. On his return to the West, Saint Germain materialized before him in a forest near San Francisco, and told him to go to Mount Shasta for further training. There he was brought into contact with Pearl Dorris, a former assistant to Godfre Ray King (author of Unveiled Mysteries, The Magic Presence, and the "I AM" Discourses), and head of the San Francisco "I AM" Sanctuary. Through Pearl, he was given advanced training in the I AM teachings and brought into further contact with other Masters. He has recently published a biography of this remarkable woman, Lady Master Pearl, My Teacher. He is also the author of Search for the Guru, Adventures of a Western Mystic, "I AM" the Open Door, and "I AM" Affirmations and the Secret of their Effective Use. More recently, having observed the tendency of many spiritual seekers to use spiritual practices in an attempt to bypass the personality, he has been teaching ways to incorporate psychology and meditation into the I AM teachings, toward the attainment of wisdom and mastery in daily life.

There are no words to express my gratitude to Peter for producing yet another spiritual masterpiece that will assist and guide so many of mankind on their paths to Mastery and the Ascension. I, like many others on the spiritual path, have studied many assorted sources of spiritual material and accumulated a large amount of knowledge, but have still felt a void inside not knowing how to connect to and commune with God, the Mighty I AM Presence, and call forth Its stupendous Love, Wisdom, and Power into my being and world producing healing, peace, harmony, supply, happiness, and ultimately the Christ/Buddhic Consciousness. This book gives simple instructions on how to truly experience oneness with your Godhead and have the Mighty I AM Presence manifest in your being and world. It is a classic for the true seeker. God bless you Peter and Lady Master Pearl!

A Pearl of Great Price

I thoroughly enjoyed the Pearl book, a paperback with only 184 pages and quite short chapters, yet intensified with such rich and extraordinary content, the reader is compelled to pause frequently. Pearl is portrayed as a woman of spiritual wisdom and intensity, a devoted student of Saint Germain, who, in her humble home, taught students the basic instructions on meditation and discovery of the I AM Presence of God within our hearts. That discovery is the goal of all spiritual journeys. She taught profound and simple Truth in clear language. On page 125, she comments “People have been telling me that my way is too simple that I should give it up and follow the eastern path. I have been asking Saint Germain if I should do that, and He told me this morning, ‘Today you will have your answer.’” The answer was Peter Mount Shasta who found her, studied with her, and performed services for the Masters for many years. He continues to carry forth the methods that Pearl taught him. This simple way to Truth that Peter presents is a true gift to his readers —we can go within our beating hearts in the sweet Silence and there find our I AM Presence of God, God in action.

The second edition extends the part on the method of relaxation to linear programming with an emphasis on rounding, LP-duality, and primal-dual schema, and provides a self-contained and transparent presentation of the design of randomized algorithms for primality testing.

Good Book for Advanced Computing

Algorithmics for Hard Problems addresses an important (if somewhat small) group of technical people who work exclusively on intractable problems. It takes a great deal of creativity and a large set of intellectual tools to make even modest progress on these problems. Prof. Hromkovic's book presents and organizes a big package of ideas and tools for approaching these problems. Even the last section, entitled "A Guide to Solving Hard Problems" addresses some of the practical issues of working on problems for which a completely satisfactory answer may be out of reach.
This book is especially helpful for software professionals solving difficult problems because it helps one to categorize and understand where the "pain points" can be found. In many software applications very hard problems are hidden within perfectly reasonable appearing and seemingly benign systems -- it's critical in these cases to correctly project the details of the problem onto a well defined set of basis tasks.

"Of limited or no use" is really all that needs to be said about this book. My greatest joy all semester was filling this book with every sardonic comment my professor could come up with to describe the utility of this author's research.
