Have a dictionary handy.

Dr. Spellman is not afraid to put his education and his vocabulary on display in this fascinating "tour" of the history of funerary rites, and religious views. This is not an "easy" read but is a deeply satisfying one. If you like superb writing and a look from the other side of the mirror on the subject of death you came to the right book.

For a short book (a mere 211 pages) I got an excellent "education" from one who is likely, a great teacher.

Some things to consider:
1-There are other books with the same title so be careful that you buy the right one;
2- While not overtly anti-religious his clear implications are that to believe in life after death is to live in a child's dream;
3- If you are sensitive about attacks on your chosen religion, approach this book with care. Just discussing the facts is enough to make priests, rabbi's, iman's and other clergy look like fools or charlatans, or both.
4-Don't buy this book if you don't like erudite writing and skillful phrasing. He characterizes Alzheimer's effects with a pithy phrase that really sums up its effects on humans.In his words it results in "cognitive plunder".

In sum: I recommend this book.

Great book

It's a tough book to read glad I'm taking a reading course which requires we right vocab words because there are an infinite amount of words I really don't know. But it's a great book once you understand the words Spellman really gets in touch with every cultural thought of death.

About the Author
Janet Romich, a longtime veterinarian, teaches a variety of science-based courses at Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wis., where she was honored with the Distinguished Teacher Award in 2004 for use of technology in the classroom, advisory and professional activities, publication list, and fundraising efforts. She is also an IACUC member for a hospital research facility and received the Wisconsin Veterinary Technician Association's Veterinarian of the Year Award in 2007 for her contributions to the education of veterinary technician students and in promoting the use of veterinary technicians in the workplace. Dr. Romich is also the author of FUNDAMENTALS OF PHARMACOLOGY FOR VETERINARY TECHNICIANS, 2e and UNDERSTANDING ZOONOTIC DISEASES as well as a co-author on DELMAR'S VETERINARY TECHNICIAN DICTIONARY. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in animal science from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Master of Science degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She remains active in veterinary practice through her relief practice, where she works in both small- and mixed-animal practices.

Excellent book - read before Exams!

This is a fine text for the subject. It is very thorough in content, well organized, has self test questions with some answers, and includes a CD if you prefer the computer to the paper. The content is almost overwhelming, expecially for just in 1 semester. I would like to have more time to read this book slowly and digest it. I will not be re-selling mine; will go over again before National Board Exam. Also tells you how to read a prescription and calculate dosages based on percentages, reading labels, review of the metric system, etc. The reading is informative, a little bit dry, but certainly manageable. Worth the price as a new book.

Chinese astrology is so much fun. I just had to have this book---as a people reference (as a water snake, I'm the discreet researcher). I've checked out all my family members and friends. It describes the many temperaments and viewpoints among us, thereby giving us more of a sense of compassion for their sensitivities and differences, as well as your compatibility. Highly recommended reading

This book is a little outdated as the predictions go up to 2014 but the information in it is still good and relevant. The more I read about my horoscope, the more my mouth dropped. It is a 99% match of the person I am and it also matches the person my girlfriend is. If you want to understand yourself, the wife, kids and maybe even business partners better, get this book. It will make life a lot easier.

About the Author

Stephen Testa is executive officer of the California State Mining and Geology Board and has undergraduate and graduate degrees in geology. He has written more than 125 articles in the field of geology and environmental science, and has published 11 books. Testa is an expert on hydrocarbon recovery, resource recovery, and reuse and recycling of soils, sediments, and wastes. He is the past president of both the American Institute of Professional Geologists and the American Geological Institute and is president-elect of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Energy Mineral Division.

James Jacobs is chief hydrogeologist at Environmental Bio-Systems, Inc., and has both undergraduate and graduate degrees in geology. He won three Fulbright grants in environmental engineering. Jacobs also worked in oil fields in Alaska and California for close to a decade before working for two decades in the environmental assessment and remediation field.

Bin Baby!

This book is like a series of "Where's Waldo" games. There are a series of scenes, each spread across the seam between two pages, including Dizzyland, California, U.S.A.; Sydney, Australia; and Barcelona, Spain. Each scene contains certain people (such as "Bin Baby", his Ladketeers, and NSA Agent Dorsch and Patty Furst) and items (such as a scimitar, a landmine, a machinegun and a United Nations Map of Installations of Mass Destruction), as well as people and items specific to the scene, such as snails and frogs in France; bulls in Spain; and killer koalas, crocodiles and kangaroos in Australia!

Someone donated a copy of this book to the troops here in Iraq, and several soldiers were passing it around when I discovered it and liked it so much, that I ordered a copy of my own!

It provided me with plenty of entertainment while waiting in airports/at airbases on my way to and from the U.S.A. for my mid-tour leave, and I still haven't looked for Bin Baby in all of the scenes!

My father in law got this as a present for Christmas. It was cute and funny, until we got to the back. In all Waldo books, there are extra lists in the back for items to search for in each spread. In the back of this book, there are similar lists. Some of these items are SO funny!!! They can be pretty crude things, so don't buy this for someone who is straight edged.
After looking through his copy, my husband and I thought of a couple people who would love this. I came directly on Amazon and bought a copy. I got the CIA version cause it was cheaper, but it was cheaper because it was much smaller than the other. If you can find the regular version, definitely buy it instead of the CIA version. It is worth the couple extra dollars.

Need a good laugh

This was bought as a Christmas gift for my friend who is serving in Iraq. I sent it over to him and he and his buddies had a blast trying to find out where Bin Ladin and the other people on the page where. A great gift for a good laugh for someone who doesn't get offended over the title of the book.

The idea for Blakewood came from a very vivid dream I had where I was actually a maid showing up at a large estate in the Regency period that belonged to vampires. �Granted I was watching the old seasons of the original Dark Shadows when I had the dream but my heroes are a lot hotter than Barnabas I promise. �Of course I took only bits and pieces of the dream I had to develop the story. �The estate of Blakewood is described exactly as it was in my dream and the character of Ms. Loman is exactly like the woman I dreamed about. �The rest was me twisting around what I'd dreamed to develop a romance that I thought readers might enjoy.

About the Author
Sable Grey resides in the deep south of the United States with her wonderful husband, three very spoiled dogs, and three crazy cats. She spends her time researching her genealogy, designing cover art, watching movies, and reading.

With favorite authors like Stephen King, Piers Anthony, and Iris Johansen, it's no mystery where the inspiration to write tales of love, adventure, and mystery come from. An avid reader and storyteller at a young age, Sable began writing small stories as a child for her mother. Magical writing style

Sable Grey is a wonderful story teller. Expert dialogue and engaging characters drew me thoroughly into the world of "Blakewood." One of the main issues which prevented a 5 star rating was the abrupt ending. I was disappointed with the sudden and too neat conclusion, like enjoying a tootsie roll pop only to find a missing fudgy center. It needed something more and even an epilogue would have satisfied this craving.

(POSSIBLE SPOILERS THIS PARAGRAPH ONLY) The father was a character that wasn't written detailed enough for me to feel like he added to the story, but I was intrigued by him and wished for more information. As written, his character almost gave me the feeling that he was used to move the story along rather than really having a legitimate role. Basically, you trip upon his character in the last few chapters of the book, he contributes to saving the day, and before you can pop back up and dust your hands off, it's all over.

There were also several disruptive editing mistakes - primarily missing words and situational gaps. For instance, in one part, the H is holding h's shoulders...they have a conversation...conversation ends and H let's go of h's hands. What? I thought he was holding her shoulders. Gaps like that disrupt the flow of the story for me. I have to stop b/c the picture in my head is broken and I think I made an error in reading.

Still, the journey was well worth it. There is something about the author's writing...it's different and has some magic to it that made me really be present in the story. I could picture everything so well in my head, she made me keep turning the pages and she made me feel something for every one of her characters. Her writing style is gorgeous and five stars alone. I would recommend this book.

This was so good! I was expecting just another historical romance so the paranormal aspects were a surprise. It's a dark, deliciously gothic tale and pulls you in right away. I actually wished it was even longer.

Not what I expected

I've never read a book by Sable Grey before and overall, while I don't dislike her style, the storyline was not what I expected. It was very odd and it ended rather abruptly without solving a few issues, the book just ends. I got this book free on Kindle and honestly I'm kinda glad I didn't have to pay for it because I was just left unsatisfied.
