Growing UP Greene is my first book for pleasure. �What better topic could I pick than my wonderful and adventurous childhood! It's all true, oh, it happened a long time ago to be sure, but I remember it as though it were yesterday. �American farms are mostly a thing of the past and I was extremely fortunate to have lived the "farm boy" life for over 10 years. Gosh it was truly great and the best part of it was that we had practically no discretionary money! As my big brother often reminds me, "it was used". Sometimes used many times over, but what ever it was, I loved it.

About the Author
Charles L. Gaby, is a retired IT Professional. He held various Information Technology (IT) management positions including Vice President of Information Systems for an international manufacturing company and for two decades was president of his own software development company which he sold in 2011. � He wrote several technical manuals, including thousands of pages documenting software systems and also wrote many manufacturing systems related articles. He is a lifetime certified member of American Production and Inventory Control Society (CPIM) and remains active in software consulting.Combining pleasure writing with business writing was always a business challenge and Gaby longed for the day when the restrictions of business were removed. Fresh into retirement in 2013 produced the opportunity with "Growing Up Greene". In his first book he reminisces about his farmland childhood in northern Indiana. �"Loose Stools" was not meant to be the next book, but real world events presented a gift of a story about growing old gracefully and otherwise. It also allowed his sometimes chaotic humor styles to flow. ��Future works include "Korean Picture Book" which is a pictorial covering his Korean tour of duty during the Vietnam war.

Entertaining Story

I have been reading more of these mini autobiographies and found this one quite pleasant. I enjoyed reading about the author's daily life and escapades growing up on a farm and not having a lot of money. I grew up in about the same time-frame and could relate to some of his adventures. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a short story that they can just relax and read for awhile.

Being from this part of Indiana myself, I found the personal and historical references very interesting and colorful. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I would like to thank the author for taking the time to document and preserve his story.

Back Home Again in Indiana

The author brought me back to a time when I lived in Indiana. A safer place for children to grow up. A world that invites simplicity. A world where a child had very little fears and most important, freedom to run wild, take some chances, have fun and enjoy childhood. The comic side of the author was quite evident as he describes the antics of growing up in a farm like-situation. He was free to run and not have to check in at a given time as most of the youth must do today. Chapter after chapter filled my mind and heart with memories of my own simple childhood. No electronics, just pure verbal communication with friends that, even today, fall into a pattern and turn back the clock when we are lucky enough to find each other again.

About the Author

Jonathan Burnside is Reader in Biblical Law at the School of Law, University of Bristol, England. He has degrees in Law and Criminology, both from the University of Cambridge, as well as a doctorate in Law from the University of Liverpool. His work explores the relationship between law, theology and criminology from theoretical and applied perspectives, beginning with Relational Justice: Repairing the Breach (1994, Waterside Press). He joined the School of Law in 2001, becoming Reader in 2007. His doctoral thesis in biblical law was published as The Signs of Sin: Seriousness of Offence in Biblical Law (2003). He was appointed by the Home Office and the Prison Service England and Wales to head an evaluation of faith-based units in prisons in England and Wales, which was subsequently published as part of a wider, cross-programmatic, study of faith-based units in prisons around the world (My Brother's Keeper: Faith-Based Units in Prisons, 2005).

Biblical law is more than a complex code of commands; it offers insight into the vocation of humanity and the purpose of God in the world.
In God, Justice, and Society, Jonathan Burnside, Reader in Biblical Law at the School of Law, University of Bristol, approaches the issues of law and legality in the Bible from his perspective as an academic lawyer and criminologist, with the primary purpose of educating lawyers. But, because he begins by investigating the basic theoretical legal propositions undergirding biblical law--its basis in covenant, interaction with ancient Near Eastern legal codes, nuanced representation of natural law, and vocation for all humanity--and argues throughout that biblical law cannot be separated from theology, his book speaks into current conversations in several disciplines. Burnside argues his subject is too important for lawyers alone, as it touches on the vocation of all of humanity, as we are all called to seek justice because we are made in the image of a just God. Fittingly, he writes with a clear and engaging style that makes the book accessible to a wide range of readers and provides a holistic teaching website supporting the book: [...].
Burnside digs deep into the biblical text. His exegesis is based on the conviction that biblical law tells a story that teaches how life should be lived. With appreciation for the rhetorical and literary features of the text, as well as its original setting in ancient Israel, he sheds new light on difficult biblical texts from the Sabbath year (Exodus 23:10-11) to lists of sexual offences (Leviticus 20, Deuteronomy 22). But even though he is sensitive to the original application of biblical law in ancient Israel, he also brings the text to bear on legal issues facing contemporary culture, as he addresses humanity and the environment, people and land, social welfare, homicide and vengeance, theft and burglary, marriage and divorce, and sexual offences, explaining the biblical background for modern movements like the `Jubilee 2000' and `Drop the Debt' campaigns along the way.
By returning to biblical law, and particularly its theological significance, Burnside directs his reader's gaze to a transcendent point of reference and vision of the good that can uphold a robust understanding of law. Without this, he warns, we will "find ourselves living in a maimed and diminished society, one in which our full humanity is not taken seriously" (477). We have dropped the golden thread of biblical law, Burnside argues. Law, in its appeal to a source of order, must return to the source of all order: God, and his purpose. This theocentric focus enables Burnside to integrate law, ethics, and biblical studies into a captivating vision of life according to God's loving direction.

An enjoyable read...but her heros and heroines all seem the same.

I was initially excited to discover another author of Regencies that don't put me to the blush with bodice-ripping tendencies. My first enthusiasm has faded somewhat. If you have read and enjoyed other books by this author, then you will likely enjoy this one...after all, her heros and heroines in the four of her books that I have read have basically the same personalities...which, since I have read the four books relatively close to each other, has become a little annoying. I think I'll space out future reading from this author. The story was good and I enjoyed the book, but here are my other issues:
-I am noticing that this author tends to fill her books with a lot of describing thoughts over and over...a lot of description. I didn't notice it, or find it irritating until the third book.
-there was the potential for a secondary romance (I love that kind of thing!) that I feel like most authors would have taken advantage of. By the half-way point I had realised that it wasn't likely...by 75% I had given up hope, then BAM there was one glancing reference that left me more annoyed than anything. Urgh!
-the author makes a confusing error with the hero's name. At the beginning, his brother's title is the same as their sister's last name so one would think that it would also be the hero's last name. Not so....for no possible reason that I can see. Also, his commanding officer calls him by the sister's last name/brother's title long before he inherits said title. The hero's name is stated right at the beginning of the book so I can only assume that the author has some incorrect understanding of titles etc.

A straight forward account of the battle. Kindle's biggest limitation is that it doesn't handle maps at all well. You have to go to other sources (google) for that. -- There's the account of the battle. Really, it was the last time the old (Nelson) style ship/fleet battle took place. So for this it is worth reading. A nice flavor of the times. -- You need to look elsewhere for the various interpretations of whether the Brits actually "won" this one. End of an era. After this the final great sea battles were in the Pacific and made Nimitz and Halsey and Spruance the last great commanders in the tradition we often associate with the British Navy.

There are other accounts that implicate the British command structure prevalent at that time. (The Germans escaped, (a) because the British fleet turned AWAY when the German destroyers put up a screen and the German fleet snuck behind and the Ship's officer who saw this could do nothing about it because the command structure was rigid and did not permit independent initiative. (Compare with Spruance and Nimitz later, in the Pacific expecting their local commanders to use their initiative consistent with overall objectives.)

Worth the price. Just for the account and the historical flavor of the account.

Good overview but not too much on details of the nitty gritty of the fight. Couldn't smell the gunpowder in other words.
