Review
“An impressive novel of an individual struggling against and defeated by a corrupt society. Recommended for readers who enjoy modern tragedies such as Jane Smiley’s A Thousand Acres.” (Library Journal)

From the Back Cover

A beautiful new translation of beloved Chinese author Lao She's masterpiece of social realism, about the misadventures of a poor Beijing rickshaw driver

First published in China in 1937, Rickshaw Boy is the story of Xiangzi, an honest and serious country boy who works as a rickshaw puller in Beijing. A man of simple needs whose greatest ambition is to one day own his own rickshaw, Xiangzi is nonetheless thwarted, time and again, in his attempts to improve his lot in life.

One of the most important and popular works of twentieth-century Chinese literature, Rickshaw Boy is an unflinchingly honest, darkly comic look at a life on the margins of society and a searing indictment of the philosophy of individualism.

About the Author

Is it me, or is it this not colloquial enough?
By NeverneverLand
I read Lao She's 1936 masterpiece in Howard Goldblatt's English translation - "Rickshaw Boy" (as Goldblatt translates its title) is acclaimed as one of the most important 20th-century Chinese novels. And this translation is very accurate - there's hardly an error, and as such supersedes two decent but not outstanding versions done by Shi Xiangzi (as "Camel Xiangzi") and Jean M. James (as "Rickshaw"). I do feel however that Goldblatt is a bit prosaic at times in some of his renditions. Remember that "Rickshaw Boy" is literature, and ought to be translated as such, with a touch of inspired genius. In the original Chinese the narrator's tone is very colloquial, full of chattiness, like that spoken by a friend you'd met up in a tavern. And of course coming from Lao She the book is strewn with old "Beijing-isms". Ideally I'd prefer shorter clauses instead of long sentences as the former better approximate the rhythms of vernacular Mandarin. But still, that's nitpicking... this is a fine version and a fine novel. 4 stars for Goldblatt and 5 for Lao She.

Everyday History
By Deestarr1
Lao can be considered one of the great writers of modern China. His witty, thoughtful and inspiring look at the life of a rickshaw driver at the turn of the 20th century offers critical insight into why the Chinese Revolution happened as well as insight into how the poor perceive their own oppression, Lao's characters are charming, well written and his plot explores the everyday life of the Chinese people.

Overall I found this to be an interesting book
