Ocean Atlas - The best yet from Jimmy Cornell

I am currently circumnavigating on Yacht BeBe with my husband, Bill. We are more than 70% complete on our west-around route which began in the Caribbean. We recently received our copy of the Jimmy Cornell's Ocean Atlas.

I have compared the Atlas to all previous information I could find including
Jimmy's previous books. The new Atlas is different because weather patterns
have changed and Jimmy has this new Atlas up-to-date. It is better because it's
charts are larger...at least twice the size (11.7"X16.5" (A3)). This allows for
quadruple the number of roses on each chart. More and new information is
better!

The Atlas contains 60 monthly up-to-date pilot charts of all oceans of the world
and 69 detailed charts of the most common transoceanic routes.

There is a description of weather conditions in every ocean. There are sidebars
with tactical suggestions have been added to the months when most passages are
made. Storm paths are included on the charts.

Included are comments and tips on tactics, as well as weather overviews for each
ocean, were contributed by meteorologists and routers specializing in those
oceanic areas, such as Lee Chesneau, Peter Gibbs (BBC), Herb Hilgenberg, Bob
McDavitt (New Zealand Met Office) and John Neal.

AT LAST THE REAL THING

It's sometime amazing to meet cruising sailors all over the world striving to get the latest (often) useless piece of electronics and then planning an offshore passage using information that is obsolete or insufficient to say the least.
The Cornell's newly published Pilot Charts are the answer to the cruiser's quest for up-to-date reliable statistical meteorological information.
Pilot Charts in use till yesterday were based on 19th century observations and although some updating was done they have demonstrated to be highly inacurate.
We have to thank Jimmy and his son Ivan (a great sailor and a computer wizard) for conceiving, planning and accomplishing such a colossal (twenty years of satellite data elaborated and put in a smart graphic form) and at the same time beautiful work.
Never mind whether you are planning a South Pacific crossing or a leisurely summer cruise in the Med you will find the Cornell's Ocean Atlas just perfect for your safety and culture.

Perfect addition to a long distance sailor's library. Although much of this information can be visualized via the Internet or software, sometimes you just need things on paper in front of you and in a large format.
Plus you have the input of master sailors to make all this relevant

In my role supporting enterprise risk management, I found this book a good quick read to make sure you're caught up on COSO 2013 updates and also provides a good primer overall on risk management and internal controls. This book in combination with ISO 31000 Risk Management is enough to give any organization the basic building blocks required for setting up / assessing / or further enhancing their risk management and internal controls program. Great advanced stats references, especially for the very reasonable prices

For the price, these books are great. This book covered both theory and practice in depth, from a social science point of view - not necessarily what a math major might want, though. SPSS, SAS and Stata - detailed worked out examples of analyses. Residual analysis, outlier analysis, various different nuances of multiple regression, multcollinearity measures...very thorough, for under ten bucks (under five when I bought my copy, if I recall correctly.

Excellent to supplement lecture

I purchased this book to help clarify some concepts I am learning in a graduate level course. Excellent job explaining these in another way to help cement the learning. I would highly recommend. Only downside is the publisher's website says we should be able to copy and paste passages from the kindle and that does not work.

About the Author

Charles Hirschkind is an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the coeditor, with David Scott, of Powers of the Secular Modern and has published numerous articles on religious practice, media technologies, and emergent forms of political community in the Middle East.

Shedding light on an important aspect of the Islamic community.

One of the interesting things in the hunt for Bin Laden and a lot of the other leaders of Al Qaeda was how even in hiding they continued to release a large number of statements that would get distributed from person to person and eventually land on the internet. This was surprising because by releasing these statements the authors risked exposing themselves and yet they seemed to have the need to risk this in order to explain what they were doing and to justify it. After reading The Ethical Soundscape this behavior makes a little more sense.
While this book does not deal with the tapes being released by Bin Laden and Al Qaeda, it does thoroughly explore the tradition of the taped Islamic sermon in Egypt and the wider Muslim community. This is an old tradition and is often done without the approval of the government authorities. The author does a good job of explaining how these sermons are listened to and the role they play in the larger society. This book counters the stereotype of Islam being some archaic religion stick in the 16th century and shows that theses sermons are not listened to passively but are actively engaged by the listener and sparks a wider debate on how the principles of Islam can be applied to the wider society. The author does a very good job of explaining this and also compares the sermons to many other traditions of public oratory to put it into context. This book would be very useful for anyone interested in the wider debates going on in the Islamic community and how this debate is reflected in the community's dealings with the outside world.

This is a very insightful read into one of the counterpublics of Islam. I had some knowledge cassette sermons were produced by the state but I did not know this was also taking place. Not only did I enjoy reading this book I also learned a lot. Good read!

Dr. Kate Hefferon is a Chartered Research Psychologist, Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader of the Msc in Applied Positive Psychology at the University of East London. She is the author of several peer-reviewed papers, books and book chapters and has presented at conferences nationally and internationally on positive psychology. Her research interests include posttraumatic growth, resilience, physical activity and embodiment.

The body's role in positive psychology

The first thing I noticed about this book is that Kate Hefferon has filled a notable gap in the extensive positive psychology literature by focussing on the role of the body. The second thing I noticed was the extremely usable organisation of the text: each chapter has clear aims and objectives, summaries, and learning resources. The learning resources include clever use of text boxes, to make us think, take time out, follow additional resources and have access to measurement tools. Kate Hefferon has produced a really helpful teaching textbook. Finally, it really is a pleasure to read and a positive psychology experience in itself. I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone teaching the topic of positive psychology.
